Statement on the attack on Al-Jabalain Hospital, White Nile State
3 April 2026Plan International is deeply alarmed and saddened by the reported attack on Al-Jabalain Hospital in White Nile State, which has resulted in the deaths of seven people and injuries to at least tens of others, including doctors and civilians.
Health facilities are places of safety and healing. Attacks on hospitals and medical personnel are a grave violation of international humanitarian law and must never be tolerated. Such violence not only claims lives but also deprives vulnerable communities – especially children and girls – of access to essential, life-saving healthcare.
“This attack is devastating and unacceptable. Hospitals should be safe spaces where lives are saved, not lost,” said Mohamed Kamal, Country Director of Plan International Sudan. “At a time when communities are already facing immense hardship, targeting health facilities only worsens the suffering of children and families who urgently need care and protection.”
“Such aggressive incidents are happening in a time when thousands of people in Sudan, including girls and women, are not able to access basic health needs due to the breakdown of the health system in the country. This will increase the gravity of the humanitarian crisis, and thousands of people may be at risk of losing their lives”.
Just two weeks earlier, on 20 March 2026, a drone strike on the Teaching Hospital in Al Deain, East Darfur, killed at least 70 people – including at least 13 children, as well as medical staff – highlighting a disturbing pattern of attacks on healthcare.
Plan International calls on all parties to the conflict to respect international humanitarian law, protect civilians, and ensure that hospitals, health workers, and patients are never targeted.
We reiterate our urgent call for the protection of children, families, and essential services, and for safe, unimpeded humanitarian access.
