Over the past two days, Russia launched one of the largest aerial attacks on Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion, putting the lives of children in grave danger.
In the past 30 hours alone, it launched more than 1,600 aerial weapons against Ukraine, including 1,560 attack drones and 56 missiles, with Kyiv the main target.
Families across the capital spent Wednesday night in shelters as explosions and air raid sirens continued for hours throughout the city. In the Darnytskyi district, a nine-storey residential building was struck, causing part of the building to collapse with people inside. Rescue operations continue as emergency workers search through the rubble. At least five people were killed and around 40 injured, including a one-month-old child.
This latest wave of attacks represents one of the largest escalations since the conflict began. Sven Coppens, Director of Plan International’s Ukraine Response, said:
“Plan International expresses its deepest condolences to all families affected by these attacks and stands in solidarity with communities across Ukraine.
“Children must never wake up to explosions, destruction and fear. No child should spend the night hiding in shelters or suffer injuries because of attacks on civilian areas. Repeated large-scale attacks on homes, schools and civilian infrastructure continue to deepen trauma, insecurity and humanitarian needs for millions of children and families. For children, nights like these leave lasting psychological scars far beyond the immediate physical destruction.
“The people of Ukraine continue to show extraordinary resilience. Strength and suffering can exist at the same time. No child should have to live through nights like this.
“International humanitarian law must be respected. Civilians and civilian infrastructure must never be targeted.”
