Civilians under threat as violence intensifies in Sudan

27 April 2026

Following a surge in violence across Sudan, Plan International warns that attacks on civilians are placing girls in greater danger.

Plan International is deeply alarmed by the deteriorating security situation across much of Sudan, where fresh attacks have been reported in recent days in Kordofan, Blue Nile, and North Darfur states.

Intensified violence puts children at increased risk

Many of these attacks have been carried out by drones and have killed civilians, including 3 relatives of a Plan International staff member in North Kordofan.

“The deteriorating situation in Sudan is exacerbating an already severe humanitarian crisis.”

An aid truck carrying relief items for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, was also hit by a drone on Friday.

In reaction to the recent upsurge in violence across Sudan, Plan International’s Country Director, Mohamed Kamal, said:

“This weekend we saw an intensification of violence in many states in Sudan.  These attacks continue to put families, including children, at risk and are extremely disturbing. We don’t yet know the full scale of damage across Kordofan, Blue Nile and Darfur but understand residential neighbourhoods and markets have been hit and we have heard from one of our own colleagues in North Kordofan that they have lost family members.

“The deteriorating situation in Sudan is exacerbating an already severe humanitarian crisis. We are scaling up our response in North Kordofan and Blue Nile but are aware of attacks to aid convoys in recent days.

“The targeting of aid convoys is unacceptable. The latest strike in North Darfur comes at a time when needs are still soaring, making it even more damaging to the humanitarian response.

Girls are suffering – attacks on civilians must end

“Children, particularly girls, are disproportionately impacted by the conflict in Sudan. Plan International urgently calls on all parties to the conflict to immediately cease attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, respect International Humanitarian Law, protect humanitarian workers and supplies, and ensure safe and unhindered access for the provision of lifesaving assistance.

“Just a few weeks ago, we spoke at the third International Conference on Sudan in Berlin and called for a humanitarian ceasefire. As the situation continues to deteriorate in the country, we urgently reiterate that call today.”
